Five Ways to Prepare Your Child for Their First Music Lesson

October 11, 2019

Learning a musical instrument is a journey. And taking that first step is both exciting and intimidating. Fortunately, you don’t have to start the process without knowledge of what’s to come. At B Natural Piano, we can get you started with everything you need to know about playing an instrument. From your very first lesson to composing your own pieces, we have all your questions covered. Here are five ways to help your child prepare for his or her very first music lesson:

1. Purchase the right materials.

Going out and purchasing the proper materials is, of course, the first step you need to take. There are a few things you will need before starting music lessons. Most important, you need an instrument. You will also want music books that are appropriate for your child’s age and level as well as a blank notebook. You may even want to buy stickers or nice pencils to make learning music fun.

2. Encourage your child to develop good behavior and listening skills.

Good behavior, listening skills, and the ability to respond to direction are essential for music lessons. Your child will progress faster if they are respectful and follow instruction. Every child has some off days, but in general, students should be well behaved to get the most out of their lessons.

3. Set up a daily practice schedule.

Consistency is key when learning music. Thus, your child needs to understand the importance of having a daily practice time. Work together to create a schedule so your child can own the idea of their music time. If they are young, print out the schedule and let them put a sticker or draw a picture on every completed practice session. Learning music should be fun!

4. Create a practice space.

Dedicating a space for practice will make learning more appealing to your child. Lay down a comfy rug, set up a music stand, put up the twinkle lights, and maybe even add a bean bag for those 30-second practice breaks. Do whatever you can to make the room cozy and fun.

5. Listen, listen, listen!

One of the best ways to prepare for music lessons is to listen to music. Whether you are in the car, helping with homework, cooking, or cleaning, you can turn on music. Find songs that will inspire your student. Start with Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and then move on to more difficult pieces. This will motivate your student and accelerate their progress like nothing else.
