One of the brand’s most recognizable innovations is its Crown Retention System, incorporating the Mason & Hamlin Tension Resonator. Developed by Richard Gertz in 1900, the system was designed to reinforce the rim and help preserve the crown of the soundboard—the slight curvature that is fundamental to a piano’s tone and projection.
That substantial construction is one reason vintage Mason & Hamlin pianos remain particularly interesting candidates for professional restoration and rebuilding.
Mason & Hamlin pianos are known for a powerful, resonant musical character and substantial construction. Their premium grand pianos have long appealed to serious pianists searching for an alternative to other renowned American and European instruments.
For a buyer considering a high-quality preowned grand piano, Mason & Hamlin deserves to be played and compared—not simply evaluated by the name on the fallboard.
At B Natural Pianos, we encourage customers to experience several instruments side-by-side. Tone and touch are highly personal, and the right piano is ultimately the one that responds best to the individual pianist.
The condition of an older premium piano matters far more than its age alone.
That is particularly important when shopping for a vintage Mason & Hamlin.
A properly rebuilt piano may receive extensive mechanical, structural and cosmetic work depending upon the condition and requirements of the individual instrument. The goal is to preserve the character of an exceptional piano while restoring its performance for another generation of use.
B Natural Pianos currently offers several Mason & Hamlin grands that have undergone significant rebuilding or restoration.
Buying a used premium piano should involve more than simply finding an attractive cabinet and checking the price.
The mechanical condition of the action, soundboard, pinblock, strings, bridges, hammers, dampers, pedals and other components can dramatically affect both the performance and long-term value of the instrument.
Our Certified Preowned piano collection is designed to give buyers greater confidence when considering a previously owned instrument.
B Natural Pianos carefully evaluates and services the pianos we offer, and qualifying instruments are professionally prepared before sale. Depending upon the specific piano, that work may range from regulation, voicing and tuning to extensive rebuilding and refinishing.
Many instruments are also backed by substantial parts-and-labor guarantees.
A well-maintained or professionally restored Mason & Hamlin can be an excellent choice for a serious pianist. These are substantial premium instruments, and many vintage examples remain desirable precisely because their original construction makes them strong candidates for continued use and professional restoration.
Condition is critical, however. Two Mason & Hamlin pianos of similar age can be dramatically different depending upon maintenance, environment, previous rebuilding and the quality of any restoration work.
The Tension Resonator is part of Mason & Hamlin’s Crown Retention System. It uses a steel structural system attached to the inner rim to reinforce the piano’s structure and help maintain the geometry supporting the soundboard crown. Mason & Hamlin identifies the system as one of its defining engineering characteristics.
Among the Mason & Hamlin grands buyers frequently encounter are the Model B, Model A, Model AA and larger concert-sized instruments.
B Natural Pianos currently has particularly strong representation among Model A and Model AA grand pianos, allowing buyers to compare several Mason & Hamlin instruments in one location.
A used piano may remain largely in its original condition and simply receive the maintenance and service necessary for proper performance.
A restored piano has typically received more extensive work to improve its mechanical, tonal and/or cosmetic condition.
A rebuilt piano generally undergoes more substantial replacement or reconstruction of aging components. Depending upon the instrument, this can involve strings, hammers, action components, pinblock, soundboard work, bridges, refinishing and other major components.
Because restoration terminology can vary, buyers should always ask specifically what work was performed, when it was performed and who performed it.
For many buyers, yes.
A properly selected and professionally restored Mason & Hamlin can provide access to a premium American grand piano at a substantially different price point than purchasing a comparable new high-end instrument.
The better question is not simply whether the piano is new or used—it is how the individual piano sounds, feels and has been prepared.
That is why B Natural encourages buyers to play and compare instruments whenever possible.
Absolutely.
B Natural Pianos maintains a large inventory of new, used and restored instruments, making it possible to compare Mason & Hamlin pianos with Steinway & Sons, Yamaha, Kawai, Baldwin and other respected piano manufacturers in the same showroom.
Tone, touch and musical personality differ considerably from one piano to another. A side-by-side comparison is one of the best ways to determine which instrument is right for you.
